I am trying to upgrade "SysMetrix" to a newer version.... and according to what I read it is not necessary to uninstall the old version. However, when I try to install the new version I keep getting the following error in the setup:

Error opening file for writing: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSWINSCK.OCX"
Hit abort to abort installation, retry to retry writing the file, or ignore to skip this file.

I have no clue what to do... any suggestions?

Do you have Sysmetrix running while updateing it? If so, close it.

The error message you're getting indicates that the file needing to be updated is in use by either Sysmetrix or another application

Aren't OCX files ActiveX?
on Oct 22, 2004
No, I closed Sysmetrix before upgrading.

To tell you guys the truth my pc has been acting a little wierd since I got the "WindowsXP SP2". I can't open and run files, and even when I change the security options nothing changes.

Could that have anything to do with it?

This is the second time a "Windows Update" messes up my PC. And the worst part is I can't remove it.

I'm not real PC savvy.

I don't think that's your problem, but you can remove SP2 in 'Add and Remove Programs' in the Control Panel. What version of Sysmetrix do you have installed (or did) and what version are you trying to update to?

Hi Yrag_

3.2.0 is what I have and 3.24 is what the new version is....

I tried removing SP2 from add/remove in Control Panel but it will not allow me to remove it because at says SP2 did not install completely all it will give me the option to do is remove it from the list... but apparently enough installed to be giving me problems.

I'd hate to have to do System Restore, but it looks like I may have to. >

because at says SP2 did not install completely

That's a new one....

SysMetrix changed their installer ( think after the 3.10 version). Move your theme folder to a temp folder and un-install SysMetrix. Manually delete the SysMetrix folder and re-boot. Download the 3.24 development build (it's on the same web page). Install that version. If it works, move your saved theme folder back. Let me know.

BTW: open the SP2 Security Center and see if it recognizes ZA and that the Windows firewall is turned off...

OK I did what you said and the new SysMetrix installed fine.... the new version is up and running, thank you.

Yes, the SP2 Security Center did recognize ZA.

Yrag, I used to click on "Download" and then I would get the option to either hit 'open' or 'save', but now after I click 'open' another window opens saying the file cannot be opened by the default program because it's either corrupted or has an incorrect file type. It recommends that I cancel the download and will only let me save it.

It does it with everything!! WB, IP, any download.

I am soooo fed up with it.... I'm seriously thinking of never downloading any window's update again.

Do you know of any other way to get rid of or remove SP2 components and the 'security center'? >

Sorry Tricia, but if it won't let you un-install thru the Contol Panel, short of a format, you're stuck. I think there's something else going on. It sounds like you use a browser other then IE. When you click on a download you should only get one prompt that asks if you want to run it or save it....and it should RUN. Are you in fact using another browser? What version of ZA do you have installed?
on Oct 23, 2004
oops....I lied to ya. There is a second prompt. It identifies the source and asks if you really want to run it. It's the same prompt you get if you save it and then run it. If you're not getting any of these prompts (or just on a save), we need to find out why...in all likelihood it would be in your Internet Options settings.

BTW: If you feel brave there is a back door to remove SP2...

Click on Start, click Run, and type c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. When the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Removal Wizard starts, click Next.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove Windows XP SP2.

I'll leave that decision to you....

I have ZA 5.1.033.000

I use IE version: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158IC

Well, I got brave and tried it cause I'm at my wit's end with it, but it said it couldn't find it.

I think what you should do before attemting to solve this problem, is to go to Windowsupdate and see which updates have failed to install. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ The SP2 update is after all almost a "new" Windows, and if some of the updates are missing or have failed to install properly, it can affect the performance of your system in a variety of ways.

Copy the skins you have to a temp folder and uninstall Windowblinds. Install the updates, reboot, reinstall Wb and copy the skins back to your Wb folder. This procedure has worked on several other systems for Windowblinds, LogonStudio, Bootskin and possibly others.

OK, I'll try that.

Thanks for all your help, Yrag.

See ya.

You're welcome, but that isn't me in #12.....

I wasn't surprised about it not finding the file....if everything was right it would have un-installed through the Control Panel. When you updated to SP2, was it on auto update and installed through the Windows update site?

We need to upgrade that version of ZA....you tell me when you're ready and I'll give you the un-install command and download link.

Sorry I took so long Yrag.... left for a couple of days and didn't see your last post.

You're a real sweetie, soooo, anytime you're ready tell me what to do with ZA.
